Meet Sponge
Who is the man in the black hat? It's time to meet your lightweight hiking and backing guru!

Hey there!
My legal name is certainly not "Sponge" - but that's the trail name I was given on the Appalachian Trail. It was the result of my relentless questioning of other hikers - trying to soak up advice on how do things better. That name stuck and I've certainly learned a LOT since receiving it.
I'm here to give back and help out those who are just starting out with backpacking...or those who just want to do it even better!
But who am I?
The simple answer: a pretty normal, 49-year-old guy. I grew up loving nature, but never really had any "trail" ambitions. I was a Boy Scout as a teen and have done typical, non-glamorous camping over the years with friends and family. But up until about 5 years ago, I had never been on a named "trail" - owned a hiking pack or hung a bear bag.
I have had to learn very quickly and trust me, I have made plenty of mistakes along the way. But learning from failures are what makes future success stories, so I've kept trekking.
I will never claim to be the most seasoned trail pro, but I can offer is useful advice rooted in actual practice. Every summer I tackle a new trail - and I invite all of you along as we learn and grow together.
