You've probably noticed on MANY of Sponge's Top 10 lists there are weights of items. That's because every ounce counts when you're carrying it on your back! To know just how heavy items are - or make a choice between similar items - use a scale like this. Sponge likes this one because it plugs in or can use batteries and makes precise measurements up to 0.1 oz.
This is the ONLY electronic on the Top 10 List that Sponge does not personally have (yet). However, he has met and talked with enough hikers that DO have inReach devices, that he feels its important to include. If you plan on being in remote locations where cell coverage is unreliable - this may be a lifesaver. It can also be used to send texts and geolocations to family members, so they know you are safe. Yes it's pricey (hence why it's on Sponge's 2027 wishlist) and does require a subscription plan - but your life and welfare is hard to price, right?
This is an well-designed headlamp. It is super light at just 1.65 oz., easy to wear with an adjustable elastic band and packs easily into a pocket or fanny pack for easy access. It also features USB-C charging (which you'll notice a LOT in this Top 10 list). This is critical, as you don't want to waste space or weight with a multitude of cords.
This is Sponge's favorite charger, because it's super compact and a bearable 6.4 oz. It also is USB-C "in" and "out" - a rarity for some chargers - making it more compatible. One of these can get you through a day hike, or you can bring several for longer experiences. The paw print illuminates to show how much battery you have left (each "pad" is roughly 20%). Available in 5 colors - Sponge uses four of these on high long trail journeys...he cycles through the colors like a campfire (first green, then red, then white and finally black).
These are PERFECT to connect your portable battery pack to your electronics - especially your cell phone. Made with durable braid material, they are just long enough to get the job done and super light. They also are available in 8 different colors - allowing you to match them to your style or specific electronics.
Sponge advises you to get ONE set of these - as it allows you to employ the traditional USB-A ports you will find in various spots - including on two slots of the Anker Travel Power Strip (see #6). Plus, if one of your USB-C ports fails for an unknown reason, this can be your safety net.
This electronic is ONLY for hikers that plan to do long trails with multiple "town / zero mile" days on their schedule. But for those folks, this compact strip can charge up to 6 devices at once safely - hook up your portable batteries, lights, phone, smartwatch, GPS - and let it do its thing overnight.
If you have an Apple Watch (like Sponge) - you know great it can be to track everything from the time to your health. But how do you avoid bringing the bulky charging cord? With this little guy - which neatly can plug into your portable batter pack. It also features a USB-A adapter, so you can use that if needed.
There will be strategic times when on a trail when you'll be fortunate enough to "plug-in" as you take a breather - like at a campground laundromat or while you enjoy blackberry ice cream at a wayside. This super light (1.1 oz) charger allows you to plug in and save your battery pack - or even charge one.
Sponge was on the "fence" about including these - he knows some hikers swear off anything that blocks nature or could compromise their safety (like hearing an approaching bear) - but there are times you seriously may want them. A super difficult climb. When listening to an audiobook in your tent at night. To drown out that annoying cricket. Best of all - these charge with USB-C, working in harmony with all electronics above :)
